IAM Communications Department Wins Labor Journalism Honors

The IAM Communications Department has been recognized as one of the best communications teams in the labor movement by winning eight awards in the International Labor Communications Association’s 2019 Labor Media Contest.

The annual ILCA Labor Media Awards Contest recognizes excellence among union publications, websites, film, video, and other media. It is the first and largest competition exclusively for labor journalists. The 2019 winners represent the best work in labor communications and promote the highest standards of labor journalism during the 2018 calendar year.

The department won awards in many different forms of media including video, photography, website design, visual communication graphics and print articles in the IAM Journal.

“I’m very proud of our Communications Department staff for their performance in this year’s ILCA awards,” said IAM Communications Director Bob Wood. “The competition is stiff—all the international unions recognize the importance of communications, and many of them are doing fantastic work. Amongst more than 600 entries, the work of our staff stood out in many facets, including writing, photography, video, and web and graphic design. This recognition is a testament to the hard work and talent of our staff.”

ILCA’s Saul Miller award highlights writing related to some of the key activities of unions: organizing, collective bargaining and political action. The awards honor the late Saul Miller, a director of the AFL-CIO Department of Information and a founder of ILCA.

Striking Local 708 Members Back to Work

“The members of Local 708 stood in solidarity and were able to obtain several gains in their agreement,” said Chief Negotiator Tyson Kelly. “We do not arrive at the bargaining table to negotiate strikes; we are there to bargain for reasonable agreements and that is what we were able to achieve for our brothers and sisters at Sherwin-Williams.”

On the nineteenth day of an unfair labor strike against the paint company in Andover, KS, local and district negotiators presented a tentative agreement to the courageous striking members of Local 708 who voted to ratify the new four-year agreement. Machinists returned to the shop floor on Monday, October 21, 2019.

“I am very proud of our union family at Local 708.  By voting to strike, their actions spoke louder than words ever could,” said President and Directing Business Representative Cornell Beard. “Their courage, determination and solidarity are by definition what it means to be a Fighting Machinist in the 21st century.”

Highlights of the new collective bargaining agreement are increases in wages of more than 10% in each category, implementation of a union-appointed safety advocate per shift, double the amount of rest periods for a twelve hour shift,

plant-wide safety wash periods and a 15% overall increase in benefits. In addition, the members also agreed to a return-to-work agreement, ensuring they are restored to their previous classifications and status without any interruption in benefits. This is the first time since 1972 Machinist members have made the difficult decision to go on strike at Sherwin-Williams in Andover.

“The members at Local 708 made the toughest decision a union person will make when they voted to strike.  But this is what solidarity looks like and why it matters.  Standing strong and together, these members were able to fight for stronger safety measures and increased benefits that will make sure they are able to return home safe and sound to their families at the end of the day. I congratulate Local 708 on their fortitude and this contract that will provide them with a better quality of life,” said IAM’s Southern Territory General Vice President Rickey Wallace.

Tell the Senate to Support Repeal of So-Called ‘Cadillac Tax’

Thank you for helping us get the House to successfully pass the bipartisan Middle-class Health Benefits Tax Repeal of 2019.

That 419-to-6 vote moves us closer to our goal of getting both the House and Senate to pass the legislation that would repeal the 40 percent health benefits tax on employer-sponsored healthcare, also known as the “Cadillac Tax.”

TAKE ACTION: Tell your Senators to co-sponsor repeal the ‘Cadillac Tax.’

The House passage in July now places the legislation for Senate consideration.

We’re now calling on you Brothers and Sisters to help us urge senators to co-sponsor S. 684. The legislation is cosponsored by 32 Republicans, 29 Democrats and one independent.
