Machinists Ready to Fight Trump Administration’s Latest Attack on Federal Workers

The Machinists Union is mobilizing to combat the Trump administration’s proposed cut to federal employees’ retirement benefits and a reported memo that threatens to remove collective bargaining for Department of Defense personnel.

The Trump administration in late January disseminated a memo that outlines a means for Defense Secretary Mark Esper to have the authority to exclude Pentagon “agencies or subdivisions thereof” from the law guaranteeing federal workers the right to unionize, citing the need for “flexibility,” according to a Feb. 8 article by Government Executive

“These are merely the latest unjust attacks on the hardworking women and men of the federal government, many of whom are U.S. military veterans. The removal of collective bargaining among Defense Department civilian citizens would have a negative impact on worker protections and morale at a very crucial part of the government,” said IAM International President Robert Martinez Jr. “The IAM is willing and ready to fight to make sure our members retain their rights to collectively bargain.”

The Department of Defense includes a 750,000-person civilian workforce, many of whom are represented by the IAM and other unions. The White House’s 2021 federal budget, which was released this week, proposes for workers to pay more toward healthcare and retirement. The White House annual budget proposal is often seen as a policy wish list of sorts that Congress can adopt or choose to reject.

Michigan Construction Traffic Managers Join IAM and Secure First Contract

IAM District 54 kicked off 2020 by adding 19 new members employed by Area Wide Protective (AWP) in Detroit, MI. Additionally, the group reached a first contract that reflects the current collective bargaining agreement for AWP locations represented by District 54 throughout Ohio and West Virginia. The deal features wage and benefit increases, quarterly safety bonuses, and more for the new members in Michigan.

The new members, who work as construction traffic managers, will join IAM Local 439. Area Wide Protective is growing and has indicated the number of members could increase to nearly 50 by the end of the year.

“We are proud to have our first organizing victory of the year and look forward to welcoming our new Brothers and Sisters into the IAM Family,” said District 54 President and Directing Business Representative T. Dean Wright, Jr. “Jerry Espy and Regina Wright did a great job on this campaign. I’d like to thank Local 439’s organizing committee for their support and assistance.”

“Congratulations, and welcome the Machinists Union,” said Eastern Territory General Vice President Jimmy Conigliaro, Sr. “My thanks go out to DBR Wright and his staff for their continued efforts to grow our union, as well as securing the all-important first agreement. We are proud to help these new members have a voice in their workplace.”

Machinists Union Praises Passage of the PRO Act

IAM International President Robert Martinez Jr., thanked the many House members who recently voted to pass the Protecting the Rights to Organize (PRO) Act.

“I want to thank the Democratic leadership team, House Education and Labor Chairman Bobby Scott and every other member of Congress who voted in support of American workers,” Martinez said. “This legislation will help stop negative attacks and acts of retaliation present in many anti-union campaigns, like the IAM’s ongoing campaigns at Delta Air Lines and Boeing South Carolina.

“We will now mobilize to hold the Senate accountable to pass the PRO Act, which expands the right to organize a union and bargain for higher wages and benefits. Organized labor is the cornerstone of the American middle class.”

The PRO Act is a bipartisan bill introduced in May by House Education and Labor Chairman Bobby Scott (D-VA) to remove state’s so-called right-to-work laws, broaden workers’ rights to strike and organize. The legislation passed the House in a 224-194 vote on Feb. 6.

The IAM recently sent a letter to members of Congress urging support for the PRO ACT.
