The IAM Local 811 Women’s Committee recently donated toiletries and hygiene products, as well as a check of $500 from IAM General Secretary-Treasurer Dora Cervantes to The Women’s Home in Houston.
The Women’s Home was established in 1957 to help women during an economic hardship. The group’s mission is to building communities that strengthen women and support families as they reclaim their stability.
The Women’s Home thanked members of the IAM Transportation local in a recent newsletter, adding that “We are so grateful. What wonderful support.”
“The Machinists Union is about bringing dignity and respect to all workers and their families. Homelessness and housing insecurity takes a toll on mental health and physical wellbeing, and when you compound that with the loss of access to basic hygiene supplies, people can feel completely excluded by society,” said Director of the IAM Women’s and Human Rights Department Carla Siegel. “No one should have to sacrifice their dignity and self-respect because of their housing situation, and efforts like this one by Local Lodge 811 empower women and their families to reclaim that dignity.”
“It’s a great honor to support such a great cause like The Women’s Home, which is so important to the community it serves,” Cervantes said. “As a Houston native, I always take great pride in participating in the work of the Local 811 Women’s Committee for my fellow Houstonians who need our support. Our work with The Women’s Home was part of a full day centered around IAM women’s recognition. I’m always encouraging our IAM members to get involved in the community, and spending the day with our sisters of Local 811 was so rewarding as we helped strengthen our community and the women who are so important to its vitality.”
“I am so proud of the women’s committee at Local Lodge 811 who answered the call to support those in their community who need their help,” said Richard Johnsen, IAM Chief of Staff to the International President. “We are very fortunate to have so many caring members and volunteers, and this contribution to the Women’s Home is just the latest example of that.”
